Were also made unexpected discoveries in the Russian Arctic.

Commander of the Northern fleet, the Hero of Russia, Vice-Admiral A. Moiseev congratulated the crew of the icebreaker with the completion of the expedition.

He noted the benefits of scientific cooperation between scientists and Northern fleet.

In the framework of the expedition the icebreaker “Ilya Muromets” was about 12 thousand nautical miles in 8 Arctic seas.

The expedition party made a landing on 33 Islands and the continental coast, the expedition members collected 125 historical artifacts on Severnaya Zemlya, Taimyr, Novosibirsk Islands and Wrangel island.

The second squad of the expedition, who worked on the sea tug MB-12, conducted a study of New Land and on August 30 has returned to Murmansk.

The expedition worked 2 unit scientists and media group PRO. Only 16 people.

Deputy Executive Director of the PRO S. Korlykhanov noted that the Russian geographical society’s expeditions were of a strategic nature.

This is especially true for studies of the Arctic because of global warming the ice in this region melts actively.

The Arctic is changing beyond recognition.

In the area of the Taimyr Peninsula, the expedition found traces of the expedition of V. Rusanov (1910), specified coordinates to the artillery batteries on the coast of the Kara sea.

During the underwater research, it was determined the location of the remains of several vessels, who died in the Kara sea in the twentieth century.

One of them is probably the icebreaker “Vaigach”, which sank in 1918 after hitting rock bottom.

In the Laptev sea in the Gulf Simms had discovered coins, glass seed beads, crucifix and other artifacts of the XVII century.

They all testify to the early development of the coast-dwellers of the Northern sea route.

In the Chukchi sea was able to fly the ship “Chelyuskin”, which sank in 1934, crushed by ice.

The researchers used multibeam sonar, it performed three-dimensional acoustic imaging of object.

For the first time managed to make a video of “Chelyuskin” with unmanned underwater vehicle “Marlin 350”.

In the Chukchi and East Siberian seas expedition was performed several studies on the route of the Hydrographic expedition of the Arctic ocean (GESLO) and the first Soviet expedition G. Ushakov (1926-1929).

The scientists also conducted a number of geological and geophysical research, made discoveries in seismology.

For the first time were investigated the underground part of the island, its depths and offset plates.

Probably, the squad made the discovery in the area of Komsomolets island of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago.

Experts noted that the melting of the ice led to the fact that the Bay Maze turned into a Strait, and formed a new island.

To land on the island to confirm the discovery failed.

This goal remains for future expeditions.

From the Novosibirsk Islands explored places associated with the Russian polar expedition of 1900-1902 years under E. toll, who went to the Arctic on the schooner “Zarya” to search for the Sannikov Land.

In the same Strait explorers landed on the coast of the island Boiler, examined the structure of the wintering crew of the schooner “Zarya”.

They also visited the burial place of the assistant of the expedition of G. Walter and grocery store Baron E. von toll.

Geologists have done research on the coast of the island of Kotelny Islands and in the Bay area, Nebalah.

Zoologists have collected information about the life and behavior of Beluga whales, seals, seals, polar bears and other animals, including walruses.

This expedition is the third Complex expedition of the Northern fleet and the Russian geographical society “Arctic Archipelago”.
